The Rockettes – The Lowdown
Overdose on New York Christmas clichés at the Christmas Spectacular featuring the Rockettes at the art deco-inspired Radio City Music Hall. As part of the heart of the Rockefeller Center in midtown, the show sees tourist and locals alike flock to the beloved holiday tradition to delight in being transported to the magical worlds that the show’s creative team have conceived. The story is center around two children who are separated from their parents while on the trip of a lifetime in New York, and the city magically comes to life as the plot unfolds, showing them the spirit of the holidays. Even the biggest scrooge’s inner child will awaken as the Rockettes line kick and dance their way through the different worlds.
Fun fact: Rockettes wear custom dance shoes equipped with a special cavity within the heel for a sound transmitter, so what the audience hears is the actual rhythmic tapping of 72 feet on stage. Arrive early and snap some pictures of the enormous Rockefeller Christmas Tree; the best location for the money shot is from 5th Avenue at the entrance to the Channel Gardens. Grab a bespoke cocktail post-show at the Top of the Rock in NYC’s highest terrace venue, the Rainbow Room’s BarSixtyFive, but lose the kitschy Santa sweater – there’s a strict dress code which frowns upon seasonal costumes.
