Empire State Building – The Lowdown

Yes, it’s cheesy, but you have to do it.

Ascend the 102-story Art Deco skyscraper and hop off at the main deck on the 86th floor, which marks the highest open-air observatory in New York. Worth noting, is that the title will soon be handed over to “The Edge” overhanging deck in the glitzy new Hudson Yards development, tipped to hover 1,100 feet above the ground. Designed by Shreve, Lamb & Harmon and completed in 1931, the building was the world’s tallest for almost 40 years. The Empire State’s Observatory Deck wraps around the building’s spire, allowing visitors to enjoy 360-degree views of Manhattan and beyond. Pick a clear day for unobstructed views of Central Park, the East River and the Brooklyn Bridge, among other icons, or visit at night to take part in the hourly light shows, which change color in recognition of various occasions. The iconic vista has starred in countless movies and TV shows, and served as the venue for many more proposals. The Empire State Building even hosts an annual contest for couples who want to get married or renew their vows at the world-famous location on Valentine’s Day.

Visit.
