Lan Yu S/S 2018 – Review
INSPIRED BY: The desire to pay homage to her Chinese roots while performing a modern reboot on feminine eveningwear. Designer Lan Yu offered up a varied lineup that’s high-end enough to dress the bridge and her helpers for the big day and edgy enough to see them through the bachelorette party beforehand.
POP-CULTURE NOD: The freshly-single Fairytale Princess Barbie on a Tinder date with an aspiring florist on the rooftop Penthouse at the Dream Downtown. Case in point: A powder blue suit with a layered tulle train – think the perpetual prom queen taking a leaf from Clark Kent’s toned-down office disguise.
WEAR IT TO: Your long-time astrologer’s wedding reception, surrounded by 20th century art and lush exotic gardens on the 18th floor terrace at the Gramercy Park Hotel.
FIRST READ: A fresh update on tailored suiting and minimalist midi dresses gave way to deconstructed party frocks with tulle accents and floral applique, while a suite of Studio-54-ready looks were served up in lurex and crushed velvet.
BEST LOOK: A white blazer covered in shimmering iridescent sequins, featuring lace detail, worn open and paired with a matching mini skirt. Also key was a strappy grey mini dress with a plunging U-shaped neckline and layered chiffon arm detail.
EYE-CATCHING ACCENTS: A day-friendly dusty pink silk kimono with forest green lace paneling and a ribbon tie. A geometric-print trench in apricot, peach and light pink, worn with matching trousers.
SPOTTED IN THE FROW: Paris Hilton, Katie Holmes, Alisha Boe.
OVERHEARD COURTSIDE: “I’ve literally sat opposite Paris in full-selfie mode like, so many times this fashion week.”
COLOR WHEEL: Grey, ivory, dusty pink, apricot, peach, silver, red, gold, white, navy, forest green, crimson, turquoise, champagne, taupe, lilac, mint.
