Lee Mathews Resort 2019 – Review
INSPIRED BY: Designer Lee Mathew’s desire to remind the country of her impeccable stronghold on the market for those on the prowl for modern separates in muted hues, capable of lasting multiple seasons with the addition of on-trend accents. Think Michelle Williams at a farm-to-table hotspot in Bed-Stuy.
POP-CULTURE NOD: Carrie Bradshaw playing the part at Aiden’s log cabin in Suffern, Upstate New York, before performing a quick costume change and zipping back to the Big Apple to dazzle Mr. Big as he pours his heart out about his relationship woes.
WEAR IT TO: A midsummer garden party in McCarren Park for pre-game Pims, before heading to Williamsburg’s new waterfront wonderland, Domino Park, for a few rounds of bocce and mezcal negronis at Danny Meyer’s Tacocina.
FIRST READ: Laid-back classics with a utilitarian feel – think throw-on cotton dresses, strapless maxis, and drawstring trousers in neutral tones, fit for an African nature safari. Mathews flexed her styling chops by expertly merging gingham and plaid in an ode to garden party-meets-country.
BEST LOOK: A scoop-neck floaty floor-length dress featuring a deconstructed floral print in ice-cream hues, worn with strappy grey sandals. Also key was a Grecian maxi dress with drawstring detailing and flyaway strands.
EYE-CATCHING ACCENTS: Statement earrings, bucket hats and handwoven panamas, spiked slides, bumbags worn over Western-inspired looks, and oversized paperboy messenger beach bags, worn over swimwear.
OVERHEARD COURTSIDE: “I can’t decide whether I like the milkmaid dresses, the Western suiting, or the Grecian gowns more – perhaps I need all three on rotation in my closet.”
COLOR WHEEL: White, lemon, mustard, grey, cream, sage, red, tan, black, powder blue, dark green, khaki, navy, dusty pink.
