Matthew Adams Dolan S/S 2018 – Review
INSPIRED BY: The iconic works of American fashion photographer Bruce Weber and the twisted irony of Bret Easton Ellis’ American Psycho. Designer Matthew Adams Dolan served up a suite of edgy workwear for the West Village freelancer with an axe to grind.
POP-CULTURE NOD: Sarah Michelle Geller as Kathryn Merteuil in Cruel Intentions, skipping class to scheme on how to outdo her step-sibling in the race to deflower the new headmistress’ daughter before the start of term.
WEAR IT TO: Your maiden tryst with your married politics professor at Harvard after taking part in the resistance march.
FIRST READ: Deconstructed shirting with elongated sleeves, chunky cable knits, and a fresh update on tailored suits stayed true to Dolan’s relaxed street-style aesthetic, while an array of denim looks – via a kimono, jacket and jeans – are sure to please the emerging brand’s loyal following. Think a mashup of Weber’s famous campaigns for Calvin Klein, Abercrombie & Fitch and Ralph Lauren.
BEST LOOK: An oversized white shirt with sloped, flowing sleeves, worn with high-waisted, wide-leg watermelon pants with cargo-style pockets and a statement drop earring.
EYE-CATCHING ACCENTS: Shirts with sleeves that trailed below the hem of blazers, gold jewelry and a return of the houndstooth 80’s-style power broker suit, styled with red flats. “MAD” college-inspired crest logos on the pocket of a denim jacket.
OVERHEARD COURTSIDE: “The bucket hats and knotted knits are like if Opening Ceremony relocated its offices to the Cotswolds.”
COLOR WHEEL: Black, red, powder blue, watermelon, grey, cream, navy, cerulean, saffron, dusty pink, brown, camel.
