Monse S/S 2018 – Review

INSPIRED BY: Designers’ Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia’s take on all things Americana. Staged on a branded basketball court in a luxury apartment building in midtown Manhattan, the show played out like an ode to U.S. sports and the fanfare surrounding them – think cheerleader-influenced fringed skirts, leather leggings laced like boxing gloves, and jagged sequin hems that referenced July 4 fireworks.
POP-CULTURE NOD: Varsity Blues meets Basketball Diaries with a more upbeat plot line. The lineup had a deconstructed, undone feel that would be just as suited to cheering on your team from the bleachers as to the dreaded walk of shame the morning after on the way back to your college dorm.
WEAR IT TO: Catching a literary reading at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, before heading to a local pub to watch Arsenal v Manchester United over a pint of Guinness.
FIRST READ: Oversized dresses, jackets in red, white and blue, sequin singlets and striped shirts played to the show’s back-to-school theme, while accessories – such as a navy fur stole with white stars and striped men’s sports socks – were a direct nod to the boxing ring.
BEST LOOK: A strapless deconstructed dress in red-and-white check with a thigh-high slit, worn with men’s running socks and a statement drop earring.
EYE-CATCHING ACCENTS: Minnie Mouse posing for selfies with front-row guests in designer Monse. Nicki Minaj flipping her hair as she took her seat next to Jaime King after strutting across the basketball court over 40 minutes late.
