Musical Chairs – Il Posto Accanto

ip3

Stumble into Alphabet City-based enoteca Il Posto Accacnto during a mild Saturday afternoon in fall and you might be lucky enough to be graced by the accompaniment of a private, three-piece jazz band. Often seen treating tourists to a free concert in Central Park, a trio of neighborhood musicians are known to set-up shop curbside on East 2nd during sundown, where patrons lucky enough to have nabbed a spot on the wooden sun-bathed tables on the sidewalk have front-row seats to an ambient musical performance. Featuring a communal table inside, oversized candelabras and rustic detailing, the Italian wine bar has a distinct homely vibe, while the owner’s take time getting to know the regulars, who they invite into their makeshift living room on a nightly basis. For 20 years, owners Beatrice and Julio have served up traditional Roman fare in the intimate, dimly-lit setting, with exposed-brick walls and low-slung ceilings boosting the charm factor among the predominantly-local crowd. From the complementary freshly-baked focaccia to a thoughtful wine list, offering red, white and rose by the glass, quarter-carafe, half-carafe or bottle, the emphasis is on recreating a little slice of Cinque Terre, right in the heart of the East Village. Visit during the holidays to experience the restaurant’s festive decorations – think oversized glittery Christmas balls dangling from the ceiling. But beware: No beer is served on the premises.
