Naeem Khan NYFW S/S20 – Review
INSPIRED BY: The memory of designer Naeem Khan’s friend, the late Iraqi architect Zaha Hadid, who designed the famous Chelsea building in which Khan’s show was staged (and in which he currently lives). Also referenced was Khan’s time designing alongside American fashion icon, Halston, and the slinky silhouettes of the 1970’s.
POP-CULTURE NOD: Rose Huntington-Whitley channeling Old Hollywood glam ahead of the Met Gala.
WEAR IT TO: The opening night gala of the American Ballet Theater’s sugary pop surrealist production, Whipped Cream, choreographed by Alexi Ratmansky.
FIRST READ: Khan flexed his chops for creating whimsical floaty gowns in vibrant jewel hues via a series of tiered floor-length dresses with statement trains, monochromatic silk frocks, and sequin jumpsuits: Think Studio 54 for the contemporary A-lister looking at a film premiere and the star-studded VIP after party. Catering to day looks were a series of separates in animal prints, while a peppering of looks featuring a bold floral pattern were sure to appeal to fans of Khan’s iconic style.
BEST LOOK: A halter dress with bodice detail, featuring a tiered skirt in shimmering gold and silver. Another crowd favorite was a sheer bodycon gown with beading and floral embroidery in lavender and blush, and styled with oversized hoop earrings.
EYE-CATCHING ACCENTS: Chunky layered necklaces worn with statement earrings and paired with clashing prints, leopard and zebra print on one-shoulder Grecian dresses and minidresses, and a black spate of black organza capes with bow detail, capable of being worn over any of the disco-ready look of the collection.
