New York Public Library – The Lowdown
Trust Sarah Jessica Parker to turn being a bookworm into the ultimate fashion statement. The iconic New York Public Library on 5th Avenue served as the venue for Carrie Bradshaw’s botched nuptials to Mr. Big in the Sex and the City movie, which Bradshaw dubbed, “the classic New York landmark that housed all the great love stories.” The literary landmark has served as the backdrop of many iconic films: think Breakfast at Tiffany’s, 13 Going on 30, and the original Ghostbusters. Open to the public since 1911, the Beaux-Arts style flagship houses the NYPL’s world-renowned collections in the humanities, social sciences, and fine arts. Grab a book and embrace the silence in the majestic Rose Main Reading Room, which spans 78 feet by 297 feet — about two city blocks — with 52-foot-tall ceilings displaying murals of candy-colored hue skies and wispy clouds. The branch was given a major restoration from 2007 to 2011, underwritten by a $100 million gift from philanthropist Stephen A. Schwarzman, for whom the branch was subsequently renamed. Get some fresh air after a solid study session and drop past the adjacent Bryant Park Café for a cocktail and a spot of people watching.
