NEW YORK NY 10022-1230
Bloomingdale’s – The Lowdown
Joseph and Lyman Bloomingdale started their department store empire with a modest ‘East Side Bazaar’ in 1872. By the 1920’s, the iconic Bloomingdale’s covered an entire city block on 3rd Avenue in midtown. Almost a century later, the icon remains the go-to destination for the latest high-end and contemporary fashion, home décor, cosmetics and accessories. Featuring a black and white Art Deco façade with a row of international flags hanging overhead, the sidewalk becomes hot property when the holiday windows are unveiled mid-November. Inside, the checkered ground floor offers more lotions, potions, and scents than an airport duty-free shop.
Hire a personal shopper for the VIP celebrity treatment and park yourself at Shoe York on the 5th floor, which spans more than 26,000 square feet. Flanked by a ring of high-end designer boutiques, the mix features fabled brands like Salvatore Ferragamo and Gucci, mixed with newer labels, including SJP by Sarah Jessica Parker, Brian Atwood and Aquatalia. Be sure to leave with one of the store’s 60’s-inspired designer shopping bags; the Big Brown Bag is as much of a status symbol as the goods inside it.
