Oscar de la Renta F/W 2018 – Review

INSPIRED BY: A trip design duo Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia took with the late Mr. De La Renta to view a Janet Cardiff sound installation and the regal tone of the Elizabethan era. The designers took a pared-back approach to the conservative collection, which took several pages from the De La Renta’s back catalog. Absent this season was any hint of their signature Monse aesthetic, which was breathed into their second collection at the helm of the heritage brand, namely through paint-splattered shirt dresses and a cocktail gown dripping with blue sequins.
POP-CULTURE NOD: Amy Adams as princess-to-be Giselle, running around Manhattan with cynical, New York City divorce attorney Robert in Disney’s Enchanted. 
WEAR IT TO: Opening night of Anthony Minghella’s production of Giacomo Puccini’s heartbreaking opera Madame Butterfly at the Lincoln Center, before a quick change to greet photographers on the red carpet at a premier at the Beacon Theater.
FIRST READ: Oversized tulle coats and cocktail gowns featuring floral print and embroidery paid homage to the label’s storied roots, as did party frocks with layered tulle and jewel-embellished accents. In other looks, the designers departed from the brand’s ladylike, polished vibe through a series of deconstructed shirts, mermaid-style disc shift dresses, and Taylor Swift-friendly sunshine yellow trenches.
BEST LOOK: A sheer floaty floral dress with a neck tie, styled under a camel wool coat, strappy emerald heels and a bucket clutch featuring a flower accent.
EYE-CATCHING ACCENTS: Leaf crystal embroidery, sheer tulle skirts, statement earrings and striped oversized coats added a youthful injection to the mix, while the show’s closing gowns served as a reminder to attendees of the label’s number-one status as red-carpet favorite.
OVERHEARD COURTSIDE: “That dress reminds me of the one Olivia Munn wore when presenting at the 2018 SAG Awards.”
