Oscar de la Renta S/S 2018 – Review

INSPIRED BY: Pop art and the back catalog of Mr. De La Renta’s handwritten letters. Design duo Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia injected a dose of their signature Monse aesthetic into their second collection at the helm of the heritage brand, namely through paint-splattered shirt dresses and a cocktail gown dripping with blue sequins.
POP-CULTURE NOD: Kristen Stewart knocking back craft beers with the crew on the set of her latest indie flick before hitting the red carpet the next afternoon with a PR-concocted relationship on her arm.
WEAR IT TO: Take in Jackson Pollock’s Exploring Alchemy exhibit at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum before a quick change to greet photographers on the red carpet at a premier at the Beacon Theater.
FIRST READ: Shift dresses and relaxed separates emblazoned with de La Renta’s trademark scrawl paid homage to the label’s storied roots, as did party frocks with layered tulle and jewel-embellished accents. In other looks, the designers departed from the brand’s ladylike, polished vibe through a series of street-style friendly parkas, Loeffler Randall-esque clutches and reworked denim pieces.
BEST LOOK: A strapless white gown with a single black asymmetrical strap, featuring a multi-color paint-splatter print, teamed with a matching bag and single statement earring. Think Katy Perry on the red carpet at the VMAs.
EYE-CATCHING ACCENTS: Pink chokers, sheer tulle skirts, statement earrings and striped oversized parkas added a youthful injection to the mix, while the show’s closing looks reminded attendees of the label’s number-one status as red-carpet favorite.
