SHOW: Pas de Calais
LOCATION: Soho Lofts, Mercer Street
DATE: Feb.11
START TIME: 2PM – 4PM
TOP INSTA LOOK: Cozy cashmeres, slouchy pants, silk dresses and weekend away-ready carry ons, debunking Kanye’s claim to intelligent casualwear.
BEHIND THE SCENES: While half of NYFW hustled to attend Kanye’s hybrid concert-fashion show – the other frustratingly rejiggering their schedules to accommodate his big fat presence – Japanese women’s ready-to-wear and accessories brand Pas de Calais was busy providing a heated serene oasis in which to view its collection of textured outwear and silk dresses in earthy tones.
OFF PROBATION: A navy shawl collar “jacoat” (jacket + coat), cashmere cardigan, matching handstitched detail pants and the designer’s Henry Cuir X Pas de Calais shoulder bag in denim blue, perfect for the two Tolstoy masterpieces you plan to knock over during your next snowed-in weekend.
GOOD BEHAVIOUR BOND: A dyed origami dress, teamed with taupe socks and bark-color slip ons.
INSPIRED BY: The beauty of decay and the imagery of abandoned buildings (but not in a vandalism way!). The designer converted the Mercer Street loft into an indoor greenhouse – or a makeshift Japanese Zen garden – think bubbling brooks and discarded wood beams covered in overgrown sprawling moss, conjuring up notions of fertility or breathing life into the forgotten.
POP CULTURE-NOD: The NYFW-equivalent of the set of DiCaprio’s The Revenant – sophistication in the wilderness. The ultimate glamping attire for The Children of the Corn’s rehabilitated young adults.
WEAR IT TO: In front of your typewriter and to the local Starbucks. This bookish casual collection is the perfect wardrobe to serve you through the penning of your next novel (and on tour thereafter).
OVERHEARD COURTSIDE: “Kanye wouldn’t give our site any tickets so I bought one for $165 and will comp it”; “His demands on his models made hiring anyone this afternoon near impossible”.
COLOR WHEEL: Muted, salt-of-the-earth tones – think mushroom, stormy sky, limestone, fawn and eggshell – anything capable of composting into its surroundings.
BEATS: The bubbling brook setting of a luxury sleep machine, played over the gentle rhythm of the meditation setting.
THE DOCKET: During a week when the masses pay to stand out, Pas de Calais offered a classy, comfortable offering for the cool kids looking to make an educated choice to fly under the radar. But never forgotten.
