Phuong My NYFW F/W19 – Review

INSPIRED BY: Designer Tran Phuong My’s NYFW debut. Titled, “Sayonara,” the collection marks the label’s push into the U.S. market.
POP-CULTURE NOD: Helena Bonham Carter as the Red Queen in Tim Burton’s fantastical 2010 blockbuster, Alice in Wonderland.
WEAR IT TO: A macabre journey down the rabbit holes at Punchdrunk’s immersive film-noir Macbeth experience, “Sleep No More,” at the McKittrick Hotel in West Chelsea.
FIRST READ: Phuong My delivered an array of edgy cocktail gowns in a trio of hues, featuring sharp tailoring and clever plays on proportion. Think peplum tops and blazers paired with layered tulle skirts, chic suiting with strategic cutouts and asymmetrical collars, and red-carpet looks with floaty trains.
BEST LOOK: An ivory keen-length shift with shoulder bow detail, worn with matching opera gloves, sheer socks and lace-up heels.
EYE-CATCHING ACCENTS: Oval saucer hats worn almost like shields added to the show’s equestrian-influence vibe, while feather accents on LBDs turned up the drama of the after-dark mix.
SPOTTED IN THE FROW: H’Hen Nie, Catriona Gray, Iman Oubou, Chriselle Lim, Esther Swan, Jenny Zheng.
OVERHEARD COURTSIDE: “This was definitely worth braving the snow for.”
COLOR WHEEL: Black, red, ivory, white.
