Proenza Schouler NYFW S/S19 – Review
INSPIRED BY: Design duo Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough’s return to New York Fashion Week. The pair opted for a simpler aesthetic than their previous flashy shows, partly due to their experience with success of their lower-priced White Label line.
POP-CULTURE NOD: Molly Ringwald as Claire Standish in The Breakfast Club. Think Olivia Palermo working on the roof of Shoreditch House on day one of London Fashion Week.
WEAR IT TO: Visit former Eyes Wide Shut actress Leelee Kimmel, nee Sobieski, at her first abstract art show at the Journal Gallery in Brooklyn, after hearing chatter that she’s just offloaded her first work to Leon Black.
FIRST READ: Drop-waist dresses in acid-wash denim, leather waist coast, and black frocks with strategic cutouts combined to create an accessible collection with a focus on wearability and modern minimalism, while tie-dye button-downs, structured trenches, and ruffled pinafore-style dresses added to the 80’s surfer-meets-grunge vibe.
BEST LOOK: A white drop-waist dress in canvas twill, featuring slouchy front pockets and a built-in neck handkerchief, worn with black boots.
EYE-CATCHING ACCENTS: A mannequin installation at the entrance to the gallery created by German contemporary artist, Iza Genzken, which featured the brand’s clothes. Also key were the black and white slouchy knee-high boots, worn throughout, and the collection’s range of oversized shopper accordion totes in canvas, denim and silver leather.
SPOTTED IN THE FROW: Kate Bosworth, Anna Wintour, Lazaro Hernandez, Jack McCollough, Liya Kebede, Kim Gordon, Skin, Aymeline Valade.
OVERHEARD COURTSIDE: “I woke up with someone else’s credit card in my purse – do you think I should try and use it before I report it? Is that bad?”
COLOR WHEEL: Blue, navy, black, white, marigold, silver, cream, taupe, lemon, khaki.
