R13 NYFW S/S20 – Review
INSPIRED BY: Skateboarding culture. Desinger Chris Leba had the L.A. kids doing tricks in empty swimming pools and New Yorker’s riding the streets on the Manhattan side of the Brooklyn Bridge in mind when crafting his latest collection, which still had a dose of the brand’s infamous grungy Nirvana-esque vibe behind it, and enough to please brand devotees in the front row.
POP-CULTURE NOD: Tony Hawk’s son at a design meeting for an update to his dad’s Pro-Skater series.
WEAR IT TO: Test your skills on the quarterpipes at the Pier 62 skatepark before heading for half-price IPAs at the reopened Black Bear bar in Williamsburg.
FIRST READ: Punk rock-meets-‘90s stoner classic, Dazed & Confused. Leba delivered slouchy coats in animal prints and plaid, his signature printed tees and sweaters, and jeans and shorts slung so low that they revealed boxers in clashing colors. The show closed with a series of camo looks: key was a statement covered in a burning skull print with a train, teamed with khaki cargo pants, stacked sneakers and cheetah-print bucket hat.
BEST LOOK: A white tee with “The Velvet Underground” on the front, paired with cutoff knee-length jean shorts, blue-and-yellow boxers, and white sneakers with racing-print laces.
EYE-CATCHING ACCENTS: Deconscructed shirts with patch detail, bucket hats in an array of prints worn pulled-down over the eye, a denim jacket featuring a take on the American flag, and models’ hair given a wet effect in line with the show’s grungy aesthetic.
SPOTTED IN THE FROW: Offset, Henri Bergmann, Yungblud, Charlie Puth, Cailin Russo, Dani Miller, Ruby Aldridge, Delilah Belle Hamlin, Amelia Gray Hamlin,
OVERHEARD COURTSIDE: “The only thing missing is an actual skateboard! But I see Offset so that’s a win.”
COLOR WHEEL: Yellow, navy, magenta, taupe, cement, aqua, black, green, olive, red, white, brown, gray, blue, khaki, camel, orange, cobalt, taupe, black, gunmetal.
