Raf Simons PFWM S/S19 – Review
INSPIRED BY: The punk and new wave music of the mid-70’s and 80’s and a subtle nod to the drinking culture of London, designer Raf Simons created a red light-filled oasis as the backdrop for his latest collection, which saw him return to the outskirts of Paris to stage the show.
POP-CULTURE NOD: Members of The Clash, the Sex Pistols and Steel Pulse demonstrating outside National Front Leader Martin Webster’s house in 1977. Think The Libertines and Babyshambles frontman Pete Doherty in a Ford Mustang while driving from Italy to Switzerland in the middle of winter.
WEAR IT TO: Catch Foo Fighters “Concrete and Gold Tour” at Northwell Health at Jones Beach Theater, before heading back to Manhattan to visit a new photography exhibit at the Morrison Hotel Gallery in Soho looking back at the birth of punk rock in New York City via Debbie Harry and Chris Stein of Blondie.
FIRST READ: Production guru Bureau Betak transformed a warehouse into a 90’s-style industrial nightclub reminiscent of a techno rave in Brooklyn, in which Simons marched out a series of looks toeing the line between a North London indie rock aesthetic and tailored color-blocked looks suited to the red carpet.
BEST LOOK: A jewel green structured coat, teamed over a fuchsia turtleneck with ring detailing, styled with black pants, stacked Gothic boots, and a silk printed tote.
EYE-CATCHING ACCENTS: Models carrying beer cans shrouded in fabric, oversized silk coats in candy-colored hues, scarf neck ties, shirts resembling six-pack yokes, prints of London punk icons on bags and T-shirts.
SPOTTED IN THE FROW: Jonathan Anderson, Naomi Campbell, A$AP Rocky,
OVERHEARD COURTSIDE: “The Uber took me close to an hour to get here from central Paris – there’s no way I’m not going to the afterparty.”
COLOR WHEEL: Kelly green, yellow, powder blue, black, magenta, cobalt, grey, peach, white, orange.
