Ralph Lauren NYFW F/W19 – Review
INSPIRED BY: Old Hollywood glamor. Designer Ralph Lauren continued his penchant for staging elaborate sets in which to present his collections via the creation of “Ralph’s Club” in a building on Wall Street. Upon entry, guests were schooled on how to perfect Art Deco opulence. Lauren is the master of elegance, and his show was an extension of the brand’s holistic approach to luxury.
POP-CULTURE NOD: Cara Delevingne making a surprise appearance at Harlem’s Cotton Club, before heading downtown for a few negronis at Dante in the West Village.
WEAR IT TO: A formal dinner at the estate you used to bartend at.
FIRST READ: Tailored suiting was front and center in Lauren’s latest see-now-buy-now collection, which featured tuxedo shirts with bow ties and cummerbunds, worn with velvet blazers, waistcoats and under tweed coats. One look even featured a short without a jacket, while a string of satin blazers in primary colors rounded out the suiting offering. Taking things from the dining room to the dance floor was a relaxed-fit menswear-style suit covered in crystal embellishments, which, with the Frank Sinatra jazz standards playing in the background had many guests feeling that the only thing missing was a choice felt fedora. Lauren’s cocktail offering began with a series of little black dresses with modern updates in the form of feather accents, tiered ruffles, and the simplicity of a simple silk slip. A strapless column gown in cobalt and red, and a floor-length frock with a waistcoat bodice in sunshine yellow and black is sure to be seen on the red carpet come awards season.
BEST LOOK: A velvet smoking jacket in black and purple, worn over a tuxedo shirt and paired with trousers and dress shoes.
EYE-CATCHING ACCENTS: In addition to the elaborate set, fans were treated to a live performance by Janelle Monae following the show.
SPOTTED IN THE FROW: Cate Blanchett, Kathryn Newton, Diane Silvers, Melissa Barrera, Poppy Delevingne, Luke Sabbat, Janelle Monae, Nicky Hilton Rothschild, ASAP Ferg, David Lauren, Laura Bush Lauren, Henry Golding, Mafalda, Langley Fox Hemingway,
OVERHEARD COURTSIDE: “I’m glad I complied with the black-and-white dress code! Can you imagine standing out like a sore thumb?!”
COLOR WHEEL: Black, gold, white, red, cobalt, yellow, purple, navy.
