Romance Was Born Resort 2019 – Review

INSPIRED BY: Design duo Anna Plunkett and Luke Sales’ new multi-city collaboration with Etihad Airways, which saw the launch of their latest collection in Sydney, before heading to Paris via Abu Dhabi as part of the airline’s Runway to Runway program. The brand’s Resort 2019 lineup was created in partnership with eclectic local artist, Jenny Kee.
POP-CULTURE NOD: Olivia Newton-John as the mysterious, ageless Greek muse in 1980’s fantasy romance, Xanadu, minus the roller-skating disco.
WEAR IT TO: House of Yes’ “Ancient Aliens” party in Bushwick, for a celestially-charged evening of trance DJs, aerialists, circus performers, marching bands, burlesque dancers, magicians, and tarot card readers.
FIRST READ: Titled, Opal Goddess, the presentation played out with razor-sharp PR-precision like an ode to fashion’s most iconic cities, kicking off with a preview of the label’s new tome, followed by a drag performance in the 1930’s-style basement dining room, which opened for the lineup of intergalactic sparkly dresses and frocks in Kee’s rainbow prints and silk collages of female icons, such as Aphrodite and Gaia.
BEST LOOK: A layered, sheer chiffon dress in lavender, lemon sorbet and seafoam green, featuring ruffled sleeves and a floor-grazing hemline, styled with strappy green heels and an alien-antler headband.
EYE-CATCHING ACCENTS: Attendees were greeted by Etihad flight attendants sporting bespoke Romance Was Born-printed silk neck scarves, while a subtle reminder of the label’s upcoming couture show was delivered through the event location – the French-themed Restaurant Hubert.
