Salt + Charcoal – The Lowdown
Japanese grill, Salt + Charcoal, which sits at the intersection of Bedford and Grand, is one of the few robata restaurants in the five boroughs of New York. Similar to barbecue, robata is the method of preparing food over a charcoal grill, with guests seated around the cooking area. Helmed by chef-owner Jiro Iida, formerly of sushi-free izakaya eatery Aburiya-Kinnosuke, the restaurant offers a wide selection of seafood, a raw bar, and Japanese-inspired appetizers. Executive Chef Tadaaki Ishizaki is an expert in the house’s signature char-grilled dry-aged beef, while fried nasu and shishito peppers are a vegetarian option favored by locals. Grab a spot at the bar and try a craft cocktail – the ‘Salt + Charcoal” packs a punch with a mix of sauza tequila, lime juice, orange liqueur, bitters, and jalapeno, laced with a lava salt rim.
