Chrysler Building – The Lowdown
New York’s Chrysler Building and its iconic spire mark the glittering architectural crown jewels of Midtown. The 1930’s Art Deco-style skyscraper sits east of Grand Central Terminal and spans 1.2-million square feet, and often cameos in apocalyptic events in films like Independence Day, Armegeddon, and Deep Impact. The tower was designed by William Van Alen on Walter P. Chrysler’s ambition of creating the tallest building in the world – a gong he held for 11 months before being clipped by the Empire State Building in 1931. While access to the roof is unavailable to the public, visit the lobby to marvel at the ornate ceiling mural by Edward Trumbull, or snap a pic at night from a rooftop bar in Flatiron. The 77-story landmark was recently offloaded for $151 million to a joint venture of Aby Rosen’s RFR Realty and Austrian giant Signa Holding. Talk is that it could be transformed from a dated corporate shell into a modern hotel. The sale is a far cry from the $800 million the Abu Dhabi Investment Council paid for a 90 percent stake in 2008.
