New York Fashion Week – The Lowdown

February and September see editors, models, photographers, bloggers and designers from worldwide flock to Manhattan for New York Fashion Week, bringing much enjoyment to the city’s locals from the circus that erupts on the sidewalks outside the shows. While the relevance of the semi-annual event has been called into question amid the rise of “See now, Buy now” fast fashion, nabbing a front-row seat to an event remains a much-coveted and frivolous delight for anyone with an interest in the sartorial. Industry icon Fern Mallis was responsible for relocating the shows to a cluster of white tents in Bryant Park in 1993, with a move to the Lincoln Center taking place in 2010. Since then, designers have shown at multiple venues around town, including Skylight Moynihan, Skylight Clarkson, Chelsea Piers, MADE Studios, and private showrooms in West Chelsea. If you’re lucky enough to land yourself a ticket to an event, don’t make the rookie error of arriving early: runway shows typically run 27 minutes late and last for approximately 13 minutes.

Get prepared for next season.
