Surf’s Up – Cynthia Rowley

Designer Cynthia Rowley can often be spotted taking a break from working at her adjacent studio to check in on her Bleeker Street store, which is home to the label’s signature ‘60s-inspired flouncy swing dresses, flirty cocktail getups, scuba sportswear and wetsuits – the latter created as a solution to her daily surfing habit. Featuring floral prints and embroideries on mini and maxidresses with tiered ruffles and flared hems, the label is a wardrobe staple among the fashion crowd due to the ability to effortlessly transition from the office digs of your tech start-up on Bond Street to margaritas at Balthazar in Soho. Be sure to checkout the activewear section at the back of the store before making your way through the French doors separating the retail space from the boutique’s showroom, where you can check out the designer’s collection for the upcoming season. The West Village icon also owns a 25-foot-wide townhouse around the corner on Morton Street, where she regularly utilizes the double-sixed garage and curb cutaway as the location for her high-concept New York Fashion Week shows. Over the summer, the designer hosts a pop-up store in Montauk, decked out like a beach-side bungalow, painted in Hamptons-appropriate sea blue. Tip: If you’re unable to decide between several dresses, the helpful manager on call might be able to cut you a sweet deal if you buy all three.
