Imagine the dream Pinterest board of a senior editor at bridal mag The Knot ahead of her rustic-themed wedding in The Society Room of Hartford in Connecticut, and that sums up the entirety of Fishs Eddy’s proposition in Flatiron. A favorite among interior decorators and bounty hunters alike, the store features an array of vintage kitchenware, mason jars, New York-themed souvenirs and glassware, peppered throughout with several designer collections. Named after a hamlet stumbled upon by the owners while on a trip in upstate New York in 1986, the store started with a truck full of unused plates, bowls, platters, cups and saucers uncovered in an old barn. Julie Gaines and David Lenovitz’s Jersey City warehouse is overflowing with original china, glasses, paintings and other sundries amassed from factories, hotels and closed factories across the country, forming a curated dedication to American-made fare. Paying homage to their brand’s core message, the couple have amassed a robust collection of historical photos of factory workers, many of whom were likely responsible for the production of Fishs Eddy’s playlist. The Broadway store now showcases thousands of eclectic, unique homewares and gifts, such as tongue-in-cheek U.S. election pieces – think an “Elizabeth Warren 2020” mug or an Obama Birther Certificate ceramic tray. The store even pays royalties to use the city’s restaurant letter grades on plates and other themed merchandise. Faced with an abundance of housewarming gifts fitting for your green thumb friend who’s just moved to a farmhouse in New Paltz, Fishs Eddy takes the work out of finding an original gift in the sea of black and white porcelain at Crate & Barrel.
