INSPIRED BY: French author Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette, who was as infamous for her writing as she was for her sensational lifestyle. Designer Taoray Wang cite Colette’s penchant for creating strong female characters as key behind his latest collection, which reached beyond the label’s signature suiting into looks favoring softer silhouettes and feminine detailing.
POP-CULTURE NOD: Ludwig Bemelmans’ Madeline taking a break from boarding school to peruse the shops of Boulevard Saint Germain.
WEAR IT TO: Walk the red carpet at the premiere of your latest directorial masterpiece, The Wolf of Wall Street 2.
FIRST READ: Wang eschewed her trademark double-breasted suits in favor of more relaxed pieces in pastel tones. Think a seafoam jacket worn undone with slits on the inner sleeves, styled over a lace jumpsuit with built-in bike shorts, a one-shoulder lace top with a ruffled neckline, teamed with an asymmetrical wrap mini skirt. Softness and ladylike accents were fused with a nod to the ‘90s power broker, as seen in a look that featured a white cropped blazer with silver embroidery, cinched at the waist with a matching belt, and styled with a silk skirt with flirty lace panels.
BEST LOOK: A white crop top with silver sequin detail at the elbow and billowy sleeves, worn with a silk skirt with a gathered ruffle at the side. Also key was a mint wrap dress that hugged the body just so – a perfect choice for transitioning from the boardroom to Friday happy hour.
EYE-CATCHING ACCENTS: Straw boater hats, which played to the show’s Parisian theme, belts with silver hardware, lace galore, and flat booties with tassel detail, which added a rocker element to polished getups.
