Pete’s Tavern – The Lowdown
For fans of Sex & the City, Pete’s Tavern shot to stardom when Miranda asked Steve Brady to marry her over three-dollar beers. But in fact, the historic neighborhood gem is the oldest bar still serving in New York, having opened in 1864, when Abraham Lincoln was in office. During the Prohibition era, the place was disguised as a flower shop, largely to host the politicians of the nearby Democratic political machine, Tammany Hall. Pete’s is popular among the celebrity crowd, featuring photographs of its feted patrons on the walls. O. Henry is among the famous writers that penned literary masterpieces within the establishment, while Ludwig Bemelmans wrote the first Madeleine book there in the late 1930’s. Stop by over the holidays to experience the tavern’s Christmas lights and window display.
