Dean & DeLuca – The Lowdown
Before genetically-modified fruit and vegetables provided a solution to the task of sifting through a bin of week-old tomatoes to find the firmest one, there was Dean & Deluca, downtown’s first upmarket retailer peddling in specialty gourmet foods. Opened by Joel Dean, Giorgio DeLuca and Jack Ceglic in September, 1977, the Soho icon has been catering to the fashion set’s entertaining needs for more than four decades, fueled by the mission of providing the world’s best epicurean treats for cooking, eating, and wowing the pants off attendees at the hottest gallery opening in Chelsea. The chain’s flagship store at the corner of Broadway and Prince Street spans 10,00 square feet and holds court as a tourist destination in the neighborhood’s shopping district. DeLuca claims the store was the first to bring radicchio to Manhattan, followed by balsamic vinegar, sun-dried tomatoes and dried mushrooms. With marble floors, exposed columns and a minimalist design, a visit to the store plays out like a journey through Ikea: the bakery, meat, fish and grocery display counters serve side-by-side to serve your catering needs.
Today, the umbrella brand has stores in New York, Washington, Napa Valley, California and Honolulu, with several locations internationally. Take home the “I Love New York” kit – the perfect souvenir to commemorate your lust for the Big Apple. The goodie box contains an array of Dean & DeLuca classics, such as the branded chocolate and cinnamon babka, frosted black and white cookies, and a logo tote bag.
