SHOW: Tome – S/S 2017
LOCATION: The Dock at Skylight Moynihan Station
DATE: Sept.11
START TIME: 12PM + 20mins
TOP INSTA LOOK: Tribal-inspired prints crafted from Piece & Co. – a sustainable women’s art collective in India – while leather cuffs and handbags featured throughout were created via a partnership with Intel, both of which detect ambient temperature, toxic gases and barometric pressure.
BEHIND THE SCENES: Keeping in check with the show’s focus on creating a healthy, natural and stress-free vibe, models were treated to aromatherapy and a full-spa offering, while Tata Harper skincare and Tribal-inspired blue and white graphic paint stripes on models’ temples gave looks an African feel.
OFF PROBATION: A black-and-white patterned off-the-shoulder top with ruffled layers, worn over a black satin mini-skirt with a billowy floor-grazing train, styled with strappy flats and an oversized straw bucket hat.
GOOD BEHAVIOR BOND: A white shirt with ruffled detailed, paired with a high-waisted shimmery pink pencil skirt with front layers, worn under an red Asian-inspired coat with gold and pink floral embroidery.
INSPIRED BY: The abstract, geometric artwork of London-based artist Bridget Riley, whose signature color palette reflects that of the Australian design team Ryan Lobo and Ramon Martin. The label also gave a nod to iconic women of power in line with the possible election of the United States’ first female president, through references to French-American artist Louise Bourgeois, Sinead O’Connor, performer Pina Bausch, Tina Chow and Madonna.
POP CULTURE-NOD: Australian Fashion director Yasmin Sewell on a long-weekend vacation to Puglia with husband Kyle Robinson and son Knox Rocket, where the androgynous blazers and tailored dresses of her London staple wardrobe are shelved in favor of feminine Sophia Loren-esque, Dolce & Gabbana layered summer-holiday dresses with plenty of ruffles to boot.
WEAR IT TO: The outdoor film screening of Kirsten Dunst’s directorial debut of the latest adaptation of Sylvia Plath’s The Bell Jar, featuring Dakota Fanning, over a glass of Margaret River Skuttlebutt sauvignon blanc on Bondi Beach, before retiring for a negroni at North Bondi Italian Food amid the city’s ongoing February heatwave.
OVERHEARD COURTSIDE: “Did you catch their Clean Cut sustainability panel in Australia for MBFWA?”
COLOR WHEEL: Orange, red, black, taupe, maroon, dusty pink, wine, olive, champagne.
THE DOCKET: Influenced by the work of iconic African photographers Malick Sidibé and Seydou Keïta and their ability to capture the natural beauty of every woman, Tome delivered an empowering lineup of looks that played with optical illusions and proportions via graphic diamond patterns on bias-cut dresses and voluminous skirts, ruffled dresses and layered jumpsuits. Equal parts suited to taking a long walk through the wilderness after milking a cow in the Prairies to shuffling at a boot-scooting event in Austin after catching the latest indie flick at the city’s annual film festival, the designers celebrated their five-year anniversary by giving geometry a schooling in feminine grace.
