Ulla Johnson NYFW S/S20 – Review
INSPIRED BY: The celebration of a diversity of cultures co-existing to create harmony. Designer Ulla Johnson embraced the concept of craft and the free-spirited bohemian when creating her latest collection of ladylike daywear and chic after-dark looks for her core clientele: the multi-tasking trailblazer with a romantic sensibility and an insatiable sense of adventure.
POP-CULTURE NOD: Camilla Cabello taking some time off from recording to hunt for accessories for her new clothing line at a Moroccan bazaar.
WEAR IT TO: An evening gallery exhibition under the stars on the roof of Hotel The Serras in Barcelona.
FIRST READ: Johnson sharpened her focus on sustainability and collaboration with local artists around the world in her lineup of ladylike strappy sundresses, ruffled gowns, and wearable separates, all of which seemed fit for your next summer vacation. Plaid dresses and tops with billowy sleeves gave way to a series of denim looks, followed by delicate chiffon gowns fit for a night out on the town. The result? A timeless collection with a jet-setting vibe.
BEST LOOK: A lavender sheer overlay gown featuring a high neckline, paired with mismatched earrings and strappy handwoven heels. Also key was a tiered cotton dress with tassel detail, styled with a crochet bag.
EYE-CATCHING ACCENTS: Dutch wax prints on maxi dresses and flirty minis, Japanese shibori technique, seashell embellishments on belts, handwoven fabrics sourced from India, and handmade bags from Africa.
OVERHEARD COURTSIDE: “Even the set has a crafty vibe to it. I could see me in the mint floaty frock in Bali next month.”
COLOR WHEEL: Mustard, red, apricot, navy, slate, gun metal, peach, orange, purple, white, cream, caramel, black, maroon, lavender, mint, brown.
