Ulla Johnson S/S 2018 – Review
INSPIRED BY: Designer Johnson’s concerns about the global outlook and the desire to recreate a sense of serenity and calm via a collection that danced with an airy, ethereal feel.
POP-CULTURE NOD: Mila Kunis tying the knot with Ashton Kutcher in a secret garden at Parrish Ranch in Oak Glen, California, amid acres of apple orchards, ponds and botanical gardens.
WEAR IT TO: A champagne cocktail reception under the stars before catching jazz group The Hot Sardines’ opening night debut at the Richard B. Fisher Center for the Performing Arts in the Hudson Valley.
FIRST READ: Frilly, tiered sundresses in ivory and pastel shades were given a dose of street-style cred when paired with matching parkas and a fresh take on the overall. Dyed-denim jeans, skirts and jackets gave flirty looks a sophisticated edge, as did the one-shouldered fitted dresses and gypsy-inspired corsets.
BEST LOOK: A floaty oversized apricot chiffon poncho, worn over a ruffled dress and paired with white lace-up tasseled heels and drop earrings.
EYE-CATCHING ACCENTS: Models walked the runway amid elaborate floristry displays that played to the show’s garden-party vibe – think coxcomb, delphinium and amaranth in pretty pinks and greens.
SPOTTED IN THE FROW: Juliana Salazar, Thaddeus O’Neil, Artist Romy Soleimani, Charlotte Groeneveld, Danielle Bernstein, Rocky Barnes, Karyn Starr, Calu Rivero, Athena Calderone, Zach Miner.
OVERHEARD COURTSIDE: “Do you think I could email the PR to find out who did the flowers? They match the dress I’m wearing to my engagement party.”
COLOR WHEEL: Peach, white, ivory, black, rust, apricot, emerald, forest green, taupe, purple, yellow, mustard.
BEATS: New York-based band Vagabon curated the show from off to the side of the runway.
