INSPIRED BY: Eschewing outdated efforts to look “cool”, the designer focused on sincerity and grace as key behind his latest collection, which carried an overt political nod to the country’s current spotlight on immigration.
POP-CULTURE NOD: If the creative team at Nautilus formed a socially-active, nationless team to enter in the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, infused with a throwback to the sportif look of the 90’s hipster lad from the Bronx or L.A.
WEAR IT TO: The “Abolish ICE” protest at Foley Square downtown, before heading to watch the New York Red Bulls battle it out against Chicago Fire at Yankee Stadium.
FIRST READ: Designer Chavarria used his platform to deliver an array of political messages, namely immigration rights, through looks that included the Twin Towers printed on an oversized tee, an upside-down American flag on a top, and Democrat Maxine Waters face under the word “Fighter” on a muscle tank. Oversized jackets and parkas were mixed with athletic separates, worn with white sneakers and camel Timberland worker boots throughout.
BEST LOOK: A teal long-sleeve gym top – as part of a collaboration with Danish soccer brand Hummel – worn with black shots, mismatched knee-high socks in tangerine and white. As part of the hookup, the brand plans to offer sponsorships to New York City soccer players with documented and undocumented U.S. citizens offering support to immigrants.
EYE-CATCHING ACCENTS: Oversized silhouettes, activist motifs on slick athletic garb in bright colors, paired with Timberland boots and normcore white kicks. Real-life athletes performed a choreographed pre-game warmup under purple UV lights before the show.
