Y-3 PFW S/S19 – Review
INSPIRED BY: Designer Yohji Yamamoto’s fixation on the notion of “air between the body” – think utilitarian and military-influenced edge with a hint of classic tailoring thrown in via the use of Shakedry Gore-Tex fabric and spandex jersey.
POP-CULTURE NOD: Patrick Swayze as Bodhi joining undercover FBI agent Johnny Utah and his surfer posse on the adrenaline-junkie’s descent on the longest free-fall in history during Keanu Reeve’s character’s maiden skydive.
WEAR IT TO: Sail you way through the 32 picturesque “Spice Islands” – a chain of relatively uninhabited gems peppered across 60 miles of the southern Caribbean in the West Indies, taking turns to pose as skipper in between tanning sessions on the upper deck.
FIRST READ: Athletic, sportif wear with a fashion twist, Yamamoto delivered a series of billowy skirts, dresses and windbreakers, high-waisted pants with the brand’s signature side stripes and drawstring detailing, and bodycon leotards with sheer paneling, able to be dressed-up or down.
BEST LOOK: A floor-length parachute skirt, teamed with a black T-shirt, printed neck scarf, black 4-D sneakers and a functional backpack.
EYE-CATCHING ACCENTS: The Y-3 logo – reimagined as a skull and heart motif on jackets and T-shirts – branded Y-3 Runner 4-D sneakers, tennis visors with white stripes, school-inspired adjustable side-release buckles on backpacks, cuffs with text printed on the outer rim.
SPOTTED IN THE FROW: Michael Lockley, Jaylen Brown, Eddy De Pretto, Jeffrey Tung.
OVERHEARD COURTSIDE: “Did you know my uncle makes custom yacht sails in Italy in the summer?”
COLOR WHEEL: Black, white, khaki, petrol, camel, powder blue, chartreuse.
