Zero + Maria Cornejo NYFW S/S20 – Review

INSPIRED BY: British TV series Victoria, which chronicles the life of a young Queen Victoria and Tom Hughes as Prince Albert.
POP-CULTURE NOD: Marisa Tomei grabbing a drink with Emun Elliott at a dive bar in the East Village following the Broadway debut of Tennessee Williams’ The Rose Tattoo.
WEAR IT TO: Watch an immersive exploration into the digital afterlife in the play User Not Found at the Brooklyn Academy of Music.
FIRST READ: Cornejo used smart tailoring and draping to create a series of edgy looks with a polished aesthetic. Think the sort of wardrobe sported by a graphic designer in London grabbing work drinks near her office in Shoreditch. Sportif bombers in a polka dot print were styled over matching wrap skirts, while slinky silk midi dresses, flirty crop tops, and a strapless cocktail gown with knife pleats played to the collection’s evening offering.
BEST LOOK: A smock-like black shift, worn over a fitted long-sleeved tee in a Victorian floral print, teamed with wide-leg black pants and leather shoes with buckle detail.
EYE-CATCHING ACCENTS: Fabric corsets with front ties were styled over jackets and shirts in clashing prints, which played to the show’s Queen Victoria theme. Also interesting were the show’s leather sandals, which were fashioned from a range of materials.
OVERHEARD COURTSIDE: “Do you want to grab a drink at The Top of the Standard after this?”
COLOR WHEEL: Black, blue, navy, gold, cream, orange, white.
