Zimmermann NYFW S/S20 – Review

INSPIRED BY: 1966 documentary, The Endless Summer, in which filmmaker Bruce Brown follows pro-surfers Michael Hynson and Robert August around the world. The subtle shift in theme added a fresh dimension beyond designer Nikki Zimmermann’s suite of Picnic at Hanging Rock-esque bohemian party frocks – think festival-ready separates in ‘60s prints.
POP-CULTURE NOD: Kate Bosworth making an appearance on late-night TV in between takes shooting Blue Crush 3.
WEAR IT TO: A beachside wedding in a glass-paneled chapel over the cliffside at the Ailia Villas in Bali’s Uluwatu.
FIRST READ: Zimmermann delivered a handful of the brand’s signature eyelet dresses, complete with the Victorian tailoring, billowy sleeves, fringed detail, and mini hemlines her fans love. This season, however, she added a dose of L.A.-glam to the mix via bodysuits, long-sleeve crop tops and swooshing maxi skirts covered in retro prints of surf magazine covers from the ‘60s and ‘70s. Paisley prints on sheer blouses and cocktail numbers played to the show’s feminine vibe, while the show’s soundtrack, Marlena Shaw’s “California Soul,” had attendees lamenting on the summer season’s recent close.
BEST LOOK: A purple embroidered maxi dress, featuring balloon sleeves and a lace hemline, teamed with gold Mary Jane’s and a matching silk pouch. Also key was a cropped safari shirt in a vintage surf print, styled with a frilly guipure lace skirt with a scalloped trim and tiered hemline.
EYE-CATCHING ACCENTS: Surf-inspired prints, chunky acrylic and gold chain necklaces, oversized shopper totes, ladylike flats, agate pendants on jewelry, and Teva-style sandals.
OVERHEARD COURTSIDE: “Is this the first time Zimmermann has ever done prints before?”
COLOR WHEEL: Red, white, blue, yellow, maroon, rose, turquoise, navy, cream, apricot, marigold, chartreuse, brown, coral, purple.
