SHOW: Zimmermann – NYFW S/S 2015
Zimmermann S/S 2015 – Review
Long before having one’s fortune read involved perching on a folding chair in tiny room in front of a chain-smoking cat lady, the art of tarot reading was a mysterious, whimsical affair, much like the vibe at Zimmerman’s spring 2015 show.
Inspired by the infamous Art Nouveau tarot decks created by American illustrator David Palladini, Sydney-based Nicky and Simone Zimmerman traded their ‘day at the races’ signature upbeat colorful style for a walk on the darker side, favoring a color palette of silver, grey, white and black.
Fortune telling is the practice of predicting information about a person’s life, and with the designer duo’s latest lineup, it wasn’t hard to forecast the type of Soho hipster masquerading as an haute hippy that might snap up one of the voluminous, floaty pieces from the collection’s bohemian mix.
The show played out as if taking a journey into a magical enchanted forest, opening with a sheer, lavender lace flirty dress, which gave way to heavier pieces such as a floor length floral print maxi dress teamed with a show-stopping trench in matching taupe, a source of protection from any wicked trolls come spring.
Swimwear also dipped its toes in the murky waters of the spiritual realm, with a black halter one piece and matching style two piece with high-waisted bottoms featuring lace cutouts.
A standout was a scuba tee featuring one of Palladini’s illustrations, teamed with an asymmetrical, tiered, or pleated skirt, while a pair of oversized hoop earrings helped up the artist-inspired vibe and is sure to help you charm the gents next time you need to fuel up your gypsy caravan.
Also a crowd pleaser was a sleeveless light camel short trench coat worn over a lilac lace number – perfect for the balmy Sydney winter.
On the more whimsical side were fluid, pretty dresses printed with zodiac symbols, white breezy lace tops and a white asymmetrical lace skirt with a tan overlay, sharpened up by a white blazed cinched at the waisted with an obi.
While it’s impossible to predict the success of any particular collection, judging by the suite of whimsical, dreamlike separates in the collection, Zimmerman stores are forecast to be crammed with ethereal, dream-catching fillies come spring.
